Rich has been given the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction.
Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America is a grassroots movement of Americans fighting for new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws and loopholes. Since its inception after the tragedy at Sandy Hook School, Moms Demand Action has established a chapter in every state of the country and, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Everytown Survivor Network, is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country.
It's clear that the founders understood that there is a constitutional right for responsible individuals to own guns for hunting and home defense. It's also clear that an overwhelming majority of Americans favor common sense gun safety measures, and that nothing in the constitution prevents us from imposing reasonable gun safety restrictions. The only thing preventing us from enacting these measures is the gun lobby led by the NRA. When I was a teenager learning to shoot a rifle in an NRA-sanctioned course, the NRA was focused on gun safety. Today, gun safety seems to not even be an issue with the NRA; they appear to only care about increasing gun sales.
In general, I don't favor litmus tests for electing state and federal officials, but the national carnage we are experiencing in every corner of our nation demands that we stop electing individuals whose top priority is to please the NRA in order to finance their re-election campaigns. In 2018 as you decide who to support for state and federal legislators, demand to know the positions of the candidates on gun safety and vote accordingly.
This epidemic requires determination to finally have open and frank discussion about what each of us sees as the underlying causes - without scripted talking points from lobbying groups. The one thing I hope we all agree on is that this should not be normal, and we need to take action to stop this from happening. The first step is to come together in our communities and find solutions together.
Why I'm Running
Dear friends and neighbors of Southwest Michigan,
As a scientist with thirty years of business leadership experience in healthcare and other technical industries, I see the potential our region has for developing a clean jobs economy.
My family has a deep love of Southwest Michigan. It’s the place we proudly call home. This diverse community stretches back over generations, but due to lack of opportunity in our region, families are being forced to uproot their lives and move out of state. People deserve the choice to stay near their families, places of worship, and schools. I am running for Congress to help revitalize our business climate here in Southwest Michigan in an environmentally-friendly way and expand opportunities for job growth. We can create jobs where people want to live, rather than forcing people to live where the jobs are.
Clean Jobs = Vibrant Communities
In contrast to politican Fred Upton and other Congressional Republicans, my experience has taught me that tax breaks for the rich at the expense of the middle class and small business owners is not the solution, but rather the cause of our weakening economy.
We have ample untapped opportunity to grow business in our region. What I have learned is that by supporting commercialization of new ideas and technologies, while focusing on the things that matter to people – universal healthcare, education and fair wages – we will also create a vibrant business climate.
I'm asking for your vote so we can fix Washington and together, leave a better Southwest Michigan for our kids.
